1st Grade
Head Coach - Mark Giacheri
Mark heads up the coaching team for 2010 being 1st grade head coach as well as club coach. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge to the 1st grade coaching role through both his excellent and extensive playing career and his previous coaching roles with Randwick’s 1st grade team. Mark has played at State and Super 12 level with NSWRU and NSW Waratahs in Australia, NPC level with North Harbour in New Zealand and at International level playing 48 caps with Italy. As well as playing rugby in Australia, Mark played professionally in Italy, England, France and New Zealand. Mark has successfully coached Randwick’s 1st grade team to 3 Grand Finals in 2006, 2008, 2009. It is invaluable to have a forwards coach who can implement the tough, technical game that ensures Randwick can play the open running game we are renowned for. In addition to his impressive coaching and playing record, Mark is also a former player with the Galloping Greens and has featured in six premiership winning teams with the Randwick Rugby Club.
Assistant Coach - David Knox
David Knox is a former Wallaby capped 13 times for Australia and was a member of the 1991 Australian World Cup champion squad. He featured in eight Premiership winning teams with Randwick Rugby Club and as well as playing rugby in Australia, David played professionally in Italy, England, France and South Africa. From 1996 he played for the ACT Brumbies, where he subsequently held the position of player and assistant backs coach in the Super 12 from 1996-1998 including the 1997 Super 12 final against the Auckland Blues. He also played in the Currie Cup with the Natal Sharks in 1997-1998. David scored 130 points for the Wallabies and had the club record of 2,900 points with Randwick. David has held coaching positions with Padova (2000), Waverley College (2002-2003), South Sydney Rugby League (2003), Randwick (2003-2004) and Leinster (2005-2008) as backs coach.
2nd Grade
Head Coach – Craig Morrison
Craig returns to the Randwick after very successful coaching stints with Australian Schools ‘A’ in 2008-09, Sunnybank 1st Grade 2009, Nudgee College 1st XV in 2007-08, Illawarriors 1st Grade in 2006 and Waverley College 1st XV in 2002-05. Craig is also a former player of the club.
Assistant Coaches – Danny Grant & Nathan Davies
Danny was a flanker who played 203 games for Randwick in years 1991 to 2006. He also played 67 first grade games for the club including 2006 1st grade Grand Final. Last season, Danny returned to the club to successfully coached 4th grade to a premiership victory in 2009.
Nathan played the majority of his rugby as a second row forward starting his playing career at Southern Districts before moving to live in Coogee. He joined Randwick Rugby Union in 2005 and played in both 2005 and 2006 seasons. Nathan has continued to be an active member in the club on and off the field and he assisted Danny in successfully coaching 4th grade to a premiership victory in 2009.
3rd Grade
Head Coach – John Maxwell
John is a one of the greats of Randwick Rugby as a player and coach and life member of the club. He was a flanker who played 428 games for Randwick in years 1972 to 1992. He also played 323 first grade games which still stands a record. John successfully coached three 1st grade premiership winning teams in years 1994, 1996 and 2000 and one 3rd grade premiership title in 2004.
Assistant Coach – John Delaney
John joined Randwick after a successful coaching stint with our neighbours and traditional rivals Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club. John is in his third year of coaching with the club, having successfully coached 4th grade to a memorable and undefeated premiership win in 2008 and 3rd grade last season in 2009.
4th Grade
Head Coach – Damien ‘DJ’ Cahill
DJ commenced a coaching career after a playing career within the Australian Army and at a number of Sydney-based and Queensland Clubs. He was the head coach of the First Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) side in 2003 and 2004 taking the side through the 3 BDE competition undefeated. In 2004 to 2006, DJ was head coach of the North Queensland Army Rugby Union. And in 2007, he was head coach of the Australian Army Rugby Union (AARU) successfully taking the side to successive Australian Services Rugby Union (ASRC) victories. In 2008 and 2009, DJ was appointed as the head coach of the Australian Services Rugby Union (ASRU). And in 2009, he also assisted Jeff Sayle and Mick Lewis with the coaching of Randwick’s 5th grade team. DJ has been an integral part in assisting Randwick with coaching as well as assisting to further strengthen the strong relationship between Randwick and the Australian Defence Force.
Assistant Coach – Jeff Sayle
Jeff is “Mr Randwick Rugby”. He is one of the greats as both a player and coach and he is a life member of the club. Jeff was a flanker who played 379 games for Randwick in years 1962 to 1982. He also played 160 first grade games for the club. Jeff successfully coached six 1st Grade premiership winning teams in years 1982 and 1988 to 1992.
5th Grade
Head Coach – Bill Davies
Bill is a former Randwick player whom has had an extensive coaching career. He has been involved in coaching for over 20 years being a member of the NSW coaching panel and an instructor for the national coaching panel. This year will be Bill’s 12th straight year coaching at Randwick Rugby.
