A State Funeral was held last Wednesday for Sir Nick Shehadie AC OBE.
Nick was always thankful to Rex and Col Thornley and their family for showing him the right path of Rugby and Lifesaving.
That 1953 tour to South Africa was famous for those 15 surf club members as they put on a surf carnival or two prior to playing the Rugby tests. What a tour..mixing everyones great loves of life in Australia's summer and winter sports.
I reckon the younger blokes today have missed out on the best of both worlds..a full surf season followed by a full Rugby season, all with your mates who end up mates for life. How many of us can rub shoulders with greats of both sports and call them your mate these days.
One thing about Sir Nick..he was always just Nick to everyone, that was his way. All I have read this week has said the same.
Will always remember him some Sundays at the club seeing him with Rupert Mudge, Harold Figures etc all having a good laugh, it was the same at the Rugger.
