Last week the Shute Shield enjoyed a competition bye and a week of rest. The Randwick teams had a couple of training sessions last week but the weather made training tough. Despite that however we have enjoyed a week of hard preparation to put us in a good position to challenge Southern Districts this weekend at Coogee Oval.
Congratulations to all our juniors in the U11s to U15s who represented Randwick during the State Championships over the June long weekend. They all did themselves, their families and their Club proud. There were some wonderful team performances and thanks goes to all the parents who travelled across the state to allow our teams to participate. Well done boys.
The early part of the season has seen some mixed results with a lot of injuries in the early rounds taking its toll. The last month however we have been very competitive with teams at the top of the table but unfortunately when the game has been in the balance we had been unable to convert pressure into points
We would obviously like to be higher up the table but over the next nine weeks we will try to improve our performance and move up the table week by week. Southern Districts currently sit 3 points above us on the table and Saturday’s game is a must win game for our boys. We have not spoken too much about the result but focused on the performance and the improvement we need from our last 35-7 victory over Parramatta.
With several debutants this year we have been able to build our experience at the top level and as some of our players are returning from injury it leaves the club in a good position. We have had several strong performers. David Vea has been improving week in week out and has solidified our set piece since we lost the ever reliable Adam Freier. Christian Yassmin has been a real attacking threat for us this year and will only improve with more rugby.
Our Colts program has got off to a flying start in 2018 with both 1st and 2nd grade undefeated and 3rd Grade starting to hit its straps. The next few weeks will be a good indication of how the colts squads are going as they face Southern Districts, Sydney Uni and Gordon, all in the top 5 on the 1st Colts ladder, over the next few weeks.
I would like to thank all our members, our volunteers and our officials who have assisted our young men over the first half of the season. We are very lucky to have so many (sometimes one-eyed) wonderful supporters who are passionate about our young men, our teams and this great Club.
Today is the Coogee Beach Club round at Coogee Oval and it would be great to get all our supporters back to the club to celebrate a good win over Southern Districts. In the coming weeks we are we are away to Sydney University and Gordon in an important month of rugby for our 2018 season. We look forward to your sideline support at home and away.
Once again I encourage you to get behind the Club and support our teams. I look forward to seeing you all at Coogee Oval for Round 10 vs Southern districts this weekend. Down the track please remember to organise your fellow Randwick teammates or fellow supporters for the local derby game against Eastern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval on the 28th of July.
Up the Wicks!
