Coach the Coaches - Bob Dwyer returns to Coogee Oval

Friday, 17 February 2012 10:13

Following the Randwick Rugby operations review the Randwick Rugby Council received a recommendation from the rugby committee (comprising of Board Members Simon Poidevin, Warwick Waugh and review committee members Bob Outterside and Bob Dwyer) that  coach education for all our coaches including those from contributing schools and Village Clubs should be implemented.

After considering all options the board decided to look no further than Randwick Rugby Hall of Fame Legend and world renowned coach Bob Dwyer to take on the task.  Dwyer, Randwick's former Club, First Grade and Rugby World Cup winning coach, returned to where it all began to impart his thoughts on the modern game and the fundamentals of Randwick's style of play, He enjoyed a captive audience including our Grade and Colts coaches for 2012, coaches from the Village Clubs and our feeder schools.

The coaching seminar ran over two full days on consecutive weekends. Bob and his coaching partner Mike Penistone presented their blueprint for playing the game this coming season and beyond and presented each attendee a copy of Bob's coaching manual. All present agreed the forum for simply discussing and sharing ideas was invaluable.

The coaches braved the heat and the rain out on Coogee Oval reliving old times, as they put the ball through the hands and tried to rewind the clock. There was some great sledging, others talked themselves up and there were a few "Burrows Park" calls thrown in, whilst John Maxwell did his best to impersonate his former coach when the boys got a little rowdy and lost concentration.

Bob will be attending Randwick Rugby training sessions throughout the season to give his observations and feedback to the coaches on what he is seeing. The Club appreciates the time given by all coaches who attended the seminar and for their enthusiasm for this initiative in the interest of the Club's success in 2012 and beyond.
