RANDWICK FIRST GRADERS SAY “WE’RE IN”. The Randwick Rugby Club has stated emphatically its “Whole Club” approach. Two Saturdays ago, at 8am, it was bucketing rain at Coogee Oval prior to their home games against Eastern Suburbs. Volunteers were starting the set-up chores when unexpectedly the Randwick First Grade forwards appeared saying “We’re in, what can we do to help?” The forwards then proceeded to erect all the mesh fencing around the ground as their turn to share assistance duties with lower grade players. At the same time, installing signage was former Wallaby and Randwick second rower, Warwick Waugh. Not to be left out was Warwick’s 5 year old son Willie, who asked some volunteers in the VIP grandstand tent “What can I do?” Being pleasant to the young boy they said, “You could put a few chairs out”. To the onlookers amazement Willie went about the ‘task’ like a 5yr old possessed, arranging tables and chairs to accommodate 500 people. I asked Warwick about his son’s set-up efforts later in the day and he replied, “Willie is incredible. If he is given a task nothing will distract him until it is done” Sounds promising for rugby in a few years time. Meanwhile, Randwick’s “Whole Club” philosophy appears to have created enormous unity.
