Randwick tackles Army 11 May 2011 |

A mixed team of current and former Wicks players, including former first grade captain Chris Houston, took on the Army rugby side at Victoria Barracks in the now annual fixture between the two sides. The Army side were very well drilled after a week in camp compared with the Randwick crew got together 30 mins before kick-off to enter battle. They quickly developed combinations resulting from week in and week out football. The early passages of the game were very physical with the boys in camo scoring the first try of the match from a break away play scoring in the left corner to lead 5 nil. The Mighty Wicks bounced back immediately with exciting passages of play culminating in a 7 pointer scored by Lachlan Mackay which remained the score through to the 40 min mark. At this point the Army boys' superior fitness kicked in as the Randwick players began to fall off tackles thus allowing the Army to post 4 unanswered tries in the final 20 mins stanza Special Randwick and Army Guests including Liz Mackay (wife of Ron and mother of Randwick player Lachlan) and friends were treated to lunch in the renowned Victoria Barracks cellar prior to the game whilst the players were also catered for afterwards with mess room hospitality. Dan Spencer, cancelling a meeting to make the game, gave the Wicks much appreciated sideline support as did Damian Cahill, Randwick 4th grade coach and Australian Services coach, who looked on with interest. Michael Gibson aka "Gibbo" was voted best Randwick player whilst Randwick 2nd grader Ben Jones was awarded best player for the Army team on this day. |
