Pre-season Sevens Our 'A' side completed the final sevens event of the pre-season in Kiama by exacting revenge on the Wolfpack from Wests Canberra who had defeated us in the final at Queanbeyan a week earlier but suffered disappointment with the 10-12 loss to Manly, the eventual winners, in the quarter-final. We defeated Camden and Canterbury in the earlier matches and then made Wolfpack "our Bunnies" with a very physical and tense 5-0 victory, promoting us to the quarter-final v Manly.
Five minutes into the first half we had a chance to go 12-0 up only to lose the ball a metre from their line and, as happens in 7s, we were immediately punished at the other end. We were then on our way to the try line as the half time hooter sounded and as Kiama play the age old rule that play ceases immediately, that try was never scored. We were first to score in the second half and lead 10-7 with a minute to go, but a defensive lapse allowed a Manly try under the posts and with both halves shortened to six minutes to make up time, it seemed that the clock was definitely on Manly's side in every possible way.
Our side consisted of no fewer than 4 colts eligible players in Ethan Ford, Liam Walker, Mark Bannon and Tom Connor. This shows a lot of promise for our 7s program in the future.
Our Colts side won their first pool game and were galant in defeat against last year's winners West Harbour. The boys were beaten in the plate quarter-final but learnt a great deal from the experience and the ten Wicks Colts players are to be commended for filling a space in the draw at late notice after Queanbeyan 'B' pulled out on Wednesday.
Now bring on the real game!
