Randwick coaching legend Bob Dwyer named Sydney coach

Former Rugby World Cup winning coach Bob Dwyer has been named as the coach of the Sydney Rugby Union team.
Dwyer, who coached the Wallabies for ten years and is regarded as one of the best coaches in the world, will be in charge of the
team for its return match against Melbourne. The March 11 fixture is one of a number of fixtures for the revived Sydney Rugby team, including the resumption of the City-Country match. After playing 347 matches as a backrower for Randwick, Dwyer went on to build his coaching platform on the running game and became a highly successful coach of the club, going in to win six premierships
and finish runner-up on another three occasions. Apart from coaching the Wallabies, Dwyer has coached in France (Racing Club of
Paris 1995-96), England (Leicester 1996-98, Bristol 1998-2000) and took charge of the HSBC Waratahs in 2001, guiding the team to its first Super 12 finals series the following year.
“It’s a great honour to help rebuild the Sydney representative side,” said Dwyer. “There are some outstanding players among the 12 Sydney club sides. We will be looking to play positive, attacking, ball-in-hand rugby. “And I expect the game against Melbourne, which will include some players from their new Rebels Super Rugby side, to have the traditional competitive edge to any sporting event between Sydney and Melbourne.”

A three-man selection panel has also been named comprising 2010 Shute Shield coaches from north, south and west of the harbour: Phil Blake (Manly), Mark Giacheri (Randwick) and 2010 Coach of the Year, Matt Briggs (Penrith).
