Almost 50 years after his last school assembly, HSBC Waratahs Assistant Coach Alan Gaffney has returned to Sydney Boys' High School to pass on his experience to a new generation of students. Gaffney was joined on yesterday's visit by fly half Daniel Halangahu and the pair spent the afternoon presenting sports awards to around 50 pupils and answering questions on everything from technology in rugby to how to balance the demands of being a professional sportsman. Although times have changed since his days, Gaffney has many fond memories from the school that won the GPS Premiership in 1963. "I remember the winning side that day included two players who went on to become Wallabies in John Brass and Phil Smith, with Brass also representing the Kangaroos. "One of our teachers at the time, Geoff Ball, had played with Randwick and he in particular was instrumental in all our careers. It was great to go back to the place that had such a positive effect on my early years and pass on anything I could - although I have to say that I'm sure the students found Daniel much more entertaining." This events was part of the HSBC Waratahs' Community Connection program, a new initiative aimed at bringing players and supporters closer together through a host of school, charity and community events planned for NSW across the season. Waratahs Rugby Media Release Wednesday December 14, 2011 Photos from all events are posted on the Waratahs Facebook wall, with full details of forthcoming events available on the Waratahs' website at >..... |
