Randwick greats form coaching duo - Maxwell and Ella take the reins in 2012

Friday, 18 November 2011 10:37

John Maxwell & Mark Ella return to Galloping Greens

John Maxwell has been appointed First Grade Coach of the Randwick Rugby Football Club for the 2012 season.
He has served the past two seasons as Third grade coach, winning the Third grade championship in 2010. In 1994, 1996 and 2000 John coached the Randwick First grade team to premierships with his teams playing the attractive and tough free-flowing style Randwick has made famous around the world.

Mark Ella is regarded as one of Australia's best ever backline players. His performances for the 1984 Grand Slam winning Wallabies are an integral part of Australian Rugby folklore. Mark will take on the primary role of First Grade backline coach. His skills and knowledge will be utilised across the Randwick Club inclusive of the juniors.

"We have undertaken an extensive review over the past few months under the leadership of Bob Dwyer. Bob was assisted by former Randwick greats Warwick Waugh and Bob Outterside. On behalf of the Board I'm delighted to announce the restructure of the football department with John Maxwell being the next First Grade coach partnering with the great Mark Ella," said Anthony Bell, RDRUFC President. "Craig Morrison has been appointed Director of Rugby in accord with the club's restructure and orientation towards the evolution and development of the football department."

"John has a reputation as one of the best technical coaches in the Australia and the respect he has from the Randwick Rugby community is second to none.  It is also fantastic to have Mark Ella come back to Sydney and once again be a part of Randwick Rugby. His rugby expertise from club level to international is hugely impressive and the experience he brings will be of great assistance to extending the Randwick style of rugby with the new generation of Randwick players."

With planning now in place and pre-season training commenced in November, Maxwell said one of the key aspects for 2012 and beyond will be reconnecting with the community in playing the Randwick style of rugby. "It is important for the club to have a real connection with the Coogee faithful, to have a strong relationship with our members and supporters and a major initiative will be achieving that on the field at Coogee," said Maxwell.
