Randwick takes running rugby to Singapore |
| Wednesday, 26 October 2011 15:30 |
The Randwick Rugby Football Club have accepted an invitation to participate in the 64th annual Singapore Cricket Club's invitational international Rugby 7s tournament. In 2011 there will be 24 teams taking part including, The French National 7s team Most of the international teams treat the Singapore Sevens as a warm up game, prior to the first of the IRB International sevens commencing in Dubai in early December.
A total of seven teams are entered from Australia including the Aussie Spirit (National Team), Sunnybank of Queensland and Randwick. The Randwick Rugby Football Club have been involved in the tournament for over 20 years, and last won the Ablitt Cup in 1993. Randwick have always received an invitation to the prestigious event, and have in the past acquitted themselves well going down to an Australian side in the final 2 years ago. Randwick treats this tournament as a way of showing the new guys, such as colts players, the essence of what this club is all about i.e. "The running game". We traditionally take a mixture of seasoned players with several colts players, this gives the younger players the chance to mix it with the senior guys and has proved to be a great benefit to the club in past years. In the past two years a young Randwick team beat the Scotland National team, and the Kenyan Impalas which is also their national side. The Randwick Rugby Football Club also welcomes a new sponsor to the club in 2011. The Noble Group who own Gloucester Coal have agreed to sponsor our participation in this ‘Singapore Cricket Clubs invitational international Rugby 7s tournament'. In particular we would like to acknowledge the support of William Randell - who is a director of the Noble Group. The RDRFC appreciates your support and looks forward to a long and fruitful partnership. Anthony Bell RDRFC President is pleased to announce the following players who have been selected in the Randwick team. Randwick legend Mark Ella will be assistant coach to club coach Craig Morrison. The team will be managed by Allen Stutchbury - club sponsor and 2nd grade manager.
