A tribute to the Thornetts, one of Australia's greatest sporting families

Thursday, 29 September 2011 12:22

A special event paying tribute to the Thornetts, one of Australia's greatest sporting families. The night will bring together many past and present sporting greats and you can join them to meet and greet this unique sporting family in person as we recognise their wonderful achievements.
JOHN THORNETT was awarded an MBE for his sporting achievements, being one of Australia's most successful rugby union captains and a member of the NSW water polo team. He played 37 rugby union tests for Australia between 1955-67, 16 as captain, made eight Wallaby tours and was only the second player to play more than 100 games for Australia. He was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame.
KEN THORNETT was the youngest player ever selected to play first grade rugby union for Randwick before he switched codes to embark on a stellar rugby league career. He was recognised as a rugby league hero by Australian fans in the 1960s and has a grandstand named in his honour at Parramatta Stadium, having played 136 games for the Eels including seasons as captain and coach. He played 12 tests for Australia from 1963-67 and won an English rugby league championship playing with Leeds. He was named NSW player of the year in 1965 was honoured by the Australian Rugby League as one of the greatest 100 players of the century (1908-2008).
DICK THORNETT is one of only five Australians to have represented their country in three international sports rugby union, rugby league and water polo at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He made 11 rugby union appearances for Australia with his oldest brother John before he switched to rugby league where he joined brother Ken at Parramatta. His rugby league career spanned 169 games with Parramatta and Eastern Suburbs and 11 Tests for Australia including three with brother Ken on the 1963-64 Kangaroo tour.
The night will include tributes to the Thornetts from revered sporting figures including Norman May and Steve Edge and multi-talented MO award winner Keith Scott will entertain with his unique brand of comedy.
Join a unique cast or past and present sporting greats for a sumptuous three course dinner with all beer, wine and spirits included.
